Getting outside with young children every day makes an enormous difference to their mood — and yours. Amsterdam offers far more than parks, if you know where to look.
## Vondelpark: the classic for good reason
The western playground (near the Amstelveenseweg entrance) has excellent equipment for toddlers and a sandpit large enough for a small village. Go on a weekday morning to avoid weekend crowds.
## Amstelpark
Less visited than Vondelpark and arguably better for children: a maze, a miniature train, farm animals, and a huge open field. The café has a terrace with direct sightlines to the play area.
## Westerpark and the Westergasfabriek grounds
A mix of nature and urban culture. The paths are good for balance bikes and scooters, and the café spaces are genuinely child-welcoming.
## De Hortus Botanicus
The botanical garden runs special children's programmes and has a butterfly greenhouse that delights almost every age. Worth the entrance fee on a cool or drizzly day.
## Artis Royal Zoo
A full day out. The planetarium and the aquarium are covered options for wet weather. Book online to avoid queues at the gate.
## A note on bicycles
Amsterdam is exceptional for cycling with young children. A bakfiets (cargo bike) or a rear seat turns almost any errand into an adventure. Many babysitters and nannies consider cycling with children a standard part of the role.
Even a local playground visit with a thermos of coffee counts. Consistency matters far more than novelty.
